The BCL (Etudes Juridiques) is a three year dual law degree offered to students in France by the Catholic University of Lyon Faculty of Law (UCLy) and Maynooth University Law Department (MU). At present, this degree programme is not open to applications by students in Ireland.

 

Students enter the programme in UCLy. Application is competitive, and includes an interview to determine academic potential and proficiency in the English language.

 

Students spend the first two years of study at UCLy, either at the campus in Lyon or the campus in Anncey. Students study modules in French law, as well as additional short courses in Irish law delivered by visiting academics from MU.

 

Students spend the third year of study at MU, studying modules in Irish law, as well as additional short courses in French law delivered by visiting academics from UCLy.  

 

Over the duration of the programme, students will complete foundational modules in French and Irish law, as well as a range of optional subjects. Successful completion of the  programme leads to the award of the License en Droit and the University Degree in Common Law by UCLy (DU Common Law formally awarded by Lyon 2 University) and the Batchelor of Civil Law by Maynooth University.

 

The third year of the programme offers French students the opportunity to experience Irish student life and Irish culture. Students can participate in a range of student societies, can apply to undertake internships through the department, can volunteer for positions of leadership with the Maynooth Students Union, and much more.

  • Students must complete 60 credits of study in each year.

 

  • Year 1 and 2 at UCLy
    • French law modules and additional Irish law courses
  • Year 3 at MU
    • Study of Irish law modules and additional French law courses
    • Combination of compulsory subjects and optional subjects

 

  • Course duration: 3 years, with the option to extend to 4 years upon successful completion of Year 3.

This degree programme offers excellent career and further study prospects. Students become skilled in the legal systems of two jurisdictions, and gain advanced linguistic and analytical skills in two languages.

 

Students graduating from this programme may proceed directly to take the entrance exams to begin training as a solicitor in Ireland, and with only one further year of study at the Kings Inns may proceed to take the entry exams to begin training as a barrister in Ireland.

 

Students are also well placed to secure places for postgraduate study, with alumni of the programme having secured postgraduate places at prestigious universities in several countries, including Paris 2 and HEC in France.
