Dr David Doyle has received an IRC New Foundations award for a project entitled On the Brink: The Legal and Cultural Implications of Extinction and De-Extinction

This collaborative project (with Dr Shane McCorristine, Newcastle University, Dr Aisling McMahon, Maynooth University and An Taisce) will develop knowledge about the legal and cultural implications of the extinction and de-extinction of non-human species in the twenty-first century.

Dr. Bracken-Roche, Assistant Professor of Criminology, has won an Irish Research Council New Foundations Award for her project entitled 'Big Data Governance: The adoption of surveillance technologies by policing and security agencies'.

Surveillance studies is nascent in Ireland, and limited research has been done on how domestic policing, safety, and security agencies adopt and deploy surveillance technologies. In Ireland, the Civil Defence Force have at least 20 drones, and the Gardaí have been exploring the possibility of purchasing drones since 2015. This project represents a new phase of data collection, network building, and research dissemination on the adoption and use of mobile surveillance technologies, specifically drones and big data practices, by policing agencies.

Dr Neil Maddox of the Department of Law has been awarded a New Foundations Award by the Irish Research Council. The project is titled: Regulating Fertility Preservation Treatment for Children with Cancer: Medical, Legal and Ethical Challenges and will be carried out in collaboration with the Irish Cancer Society.
