The Higher Diploma in Science (Computer Science) MHG58 is a postgraduate course intended for graduates whose level 8 primary degree included 3-years' study of Computing. On completion of the course participants would be expected to reach a level of competence equivalent to that of a four year BSc graduate in computer science.

Applicants for the course are required to hold a 3-year university degree (lNFQ Level 8 or equivalent honours degree), or its equivalent, recognized by the Senate of the University with computing as one of its subjects. (Examples include BA degrees with computing and degrees where computing is a minor subject). Graduates with less computing than required are recommended to also apply for the Higher Diploma in Software Development MHG70. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to an Irish university primary degree level (NFQ Level 8 or equivalent honours degree).

Minimum English language requirements:
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study. For information about English language tests accepted and required scores, please see here. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and international applicants.

Applications for MHG70 and MHG58 will also be considered through the RPL entry route from candidates with a 3-year Level 7 degree, coupled with relevant industrial experience or practice.  Applicants who do not have a level 8 primary degree may also have the opportunity to apply through the Maynooth University (RPL) Recognition of Prior Learning route.

Students choose, subject to module prerequisites, 9 modules; modules chosen must not have been covered at this level in a previous qualification. In addition a project is required.

Course Duration: 1 year full-time

The course brings graduates to a level equivalent to a 4-year degree in computer science and to apply for jobs intended for such graduates. Graduates will be eligible to apply for further postgraduate study including taught MSc in Computer Science and MSc/PhD by research.
