The Arts and Humanities Institute, the School of Celtic Studies and Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge are delighted to announce a first in research funding innovation in the Faculty. All three are partnering to support Scríobhaithe Gaeilge an Tuaiscirt (Gaelic Scribes of the North), a six-month research project under the direction of An tOllamh Fionntán de Brún, which runs from  November 2019 to  May 2020. It is the first stage of a broader research project entitled Atlas Litríocht na Gaeilge (Atlas of Irish-language Literature), which will map modern and contemporary literary activity in the Irish language on the island of Ireland and overseas. The aim of this initial 6-month project is to reconstruct, describe and analyse scribal activity and networks in the north of Ireland between 1650 and 1900, with a view to preparing a proposal for external funding. The pilot research, based on a doctoral project by Fintan Keegan (2019), will provide over 220 biographies of Northern scribes with a detailed list of their output. The aim of the project is to collate and present this information both geographically and chronologically, using the latest digital technology to create a publicly accessible database and Virtual Research Environment.  Analysis of the  Ulster dataset is already revealing  how scribal networking operated, how language shifts affected scribal output, the influence of the spread of  literacy, patterns of rural and urban patronage and the intergenerational transmission of texts and ideas. The project also has important public outreach objectives, aiming to enhance resources for public history and to foster public engagement with thsi unique and overlooked portion of Irish and international cultural heritage.

Scéim phíolótach atá sa tionscadal, Scríobhaithe Gaeilge an Tuaiscirt, a mhairfidh 6 mhí, ag tosú ar an 4 Samhain 2019 agus ag críochú ar an 3 Bealtaine 2020. Is é seo an chéad chéim de thionscadal taighde níos leithne dar teideal Atlas Litríocht na Gaeilge. Is é is cuspóir don bhuntionscnamh ná cur leis an dioscúrsa scolártha a bhaineann le saothrú lámhscríbhinní agus gréasáin scríobhaithe i dTuaisceart na hÉireann idir 1650 agus 1900. Táthar ag súil leis go mbeidh an tionscadal seo luachmhar do stairithe áitiúla agus tá sé de chuspóir againn, chomh maith, feasacht a ardú i measc an ghnáthphobail ar an ngné seo de stair léinn na tíre, a ndéantar neamhaird uirthi go minic. Tá an taighde bunaithe ar thráchtas dochtúireachta 4 imleabhar Fintan Keegan, a chuireann breis is 220 cuntas beathaisnéise ar scríobhaithe an Tuaiscirt, chomh maith le liosta cuimsitheach dá saothar idir 1650 agus 1900, ar fáil. Tá fúinn an t-eolas seo a léiriú agus a chur in ord idir thíreolaíoch agus chróineolaíoch ar mhodh digiteach le go bhféadfar bunachar a fhorbairt a mbeidh taighdeoirí agus an gnáthphobal araon in ann teacht air. Déanfar scagadh ar an eolas faoi theidil éagsúla, mar shampla: an t-athrú teanga, an litearthacht, an phatrúnacht uirbeach agus caomhnú agus seachadadh idirghlúine an traidisiúin.
