Social Challenges in the Design of Technology - TechSoc Seminar Series

The topic is ‘Social Challenges in the Design of Technology’ and we have three short presentations by researchers working on the design of ICT technologies and both addressing and evaluating public concerns.
 
Speakers:

  • Tim McCarthy PhD is a Professor of Computer Science and based in the National Centre for Geo-computation and MUSSI at Maynooth University. He has over thirty years R&D experience in Geographical Information Science and Earth Observation. He is currently Principal Investigator on SFI Strategic Research Partnership U-Flyte, leading a team of ten researchers to develop novel solutions for unmanned aircraft system airspace. He is also leading the SFI funded project DPERM-AI which is developing a Data Platform for Emergency Response Management  – see https://dperm.ai/   See his full MU profile.
  • Deirdre Desmond PhD is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and co-director of the Assisting Living and Learning (ALL) Institute.  She co-leads the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies.  Her research is grounded in health and rehabilitation psychology, with particular focus on psychosocial adjustment to long-term illness and acquired physical impairment.  She is particularly interested in exploring issues at the interface between people and assistive technologies, taking a person-centred approach to technology.  See her full MU profile.  
  • Dr. Irina Tal is an Assistant Professor, School of Computing, Dublin City University(DCU), and Academic Lead MSc in Blockchain – Distributed Ledger Technologies (Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet & DCU programme). She is teaching in the Cyber Security area. She is the PI of PRIVATT project, a SFI COVID-19 funded project on Assessing Irish Attitudes to Privacy in Times of COVID19 project funded by Science Foundation Ireland. PRIVATT is currently surveying the public about their attitudes to privacy, data sharing & the COVID-19 app during the COVID pandemic. The PRIVATT team is an interdisciplinary team with a range of expertise: data analytics, sentiment analysis, machine learning, communications, security, privacy, law.
