Postgraduate Taught Masters

MUSSI offers taught masters programmes, and hosts students undertaking research degrees  (MLitt and PhD) in social science departments in the University. For research degrees, prospective applicants are advised to start an early dialogue with members of the Faculty of the Social Sciences who share cognate research interests.  

Our taught masters programmes are:

MSc Geocomputation
This full-time MSc in Geocomputation aims to provide a sound theoretical and practical foundation in Geocomputation for numerate graduates with suitable backgrounds in subjects such as mathematics, engineering, geography, computer science, geomatics, and mining, and professionals working in cognate disciplines. MA in Society and Space (not currently running )
A full time course designed for graduates with an interest in advanced debates within contemporary Human Geography, Sociology, and Public Policy, especially relating to planning and spatial development, sustaining communities, the knowledge economy and social justice and in acquiring training in research methods.  It is run jointly between MUSSI, Department of Geography and Department of Sociology.  For further details please visit here. 

Postgraduate PhD and Research Masters (MLitt)
M.Litt
PhD 
Whilst all PhD and MLitt students are registered to academic departments, MUSSI funds, houses, supervises, and provides training for research students from across the Faculty of Social Sciences.  The PhD degree is research intensive normally involves a minimum of three years of study, the MLitt degree a minimum of two years of study. Applicants are generally expected to hold a good upper second or first class undergraduate honours degree AND a masters degree in a social science discipline or a cognate subject.  MUSSI is actively involved in providing research students with advanced graduate level training modules (in the philosophy of the social sciences, research methods, thematic topics, ethics, and professional development).  MUSSI is a founding member of the Irish Social Sciences Platform (ISSP) and offers research students from ISSP member institutions the opportunity of taking advanced training modules at Maynooth University and Maynooth University research students the opportunity of taking training modules in Higher Education Institutions across the state.
