Dr Michael Hayden, Assistant Professor of Accounting, has just published an article titled Approaches to Analysis of Qualitative Research Data: A Reflection on the Manual and Technological Approaches with co-authors Dr Ruth Mattimoe and Dr Brid Murphy from Dublin City University, and Professor Joan Ballantine from Ulster University in the Accounting, Finance & Governance Review Journal. The paper provides reflective and critical insights into the experiences of two PhD qualitative studies which adopted different approaches to data analysis. We consider the motivations, challenges and benefits of choosing either a technological (NVivo) or manual approach to qualitative data analysis. The paper contributes to the limited literature which has explored the comparative experiences of those undertaking qualitative data analysis using different approaches. It aims to add insights into how researchers conduct qualitative data analysis using different approaches and the lessons learnt.
