David Mangan updates the International Association of Labour Law Journals
Dr. David Mangan spoke on the early lessons drawn from Covid-19’s impact on the workplace. Hosted by the Institute for Labour Law at KU Leuven, the virtual gathering was attended by labour law scholars around the world.

Socially-distanced restorative practices day held at IPS College
On 31st August 2020, members of the Maynooth University Department of Law collaborated with Irish Prison Service College (IPSC) tutors to organise a one-day workshop on restorative practices training. The day took place as part of a wider IPS project relating to its strategic commitments to explore and examine mechanisms for incorporating restorative justice principles throughout the service, and to include restorative principles in the training of staff, including all new recruits.

Stephanie Thompson featured in Irish Times Smart Choices
PhD candidate at the Department of Law, Stephanie Thompson, is featured in today’s Irish Times Smart Choices supplement. From being an early school leaver to finding herself enthralled by law on a PLC in business administration and legal studies she went on to study in Carlow IT and was later accepted to the MA in Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice at Maynooth University. Today, Stephanie is a PhD candidate at the Department of Law and John Hume scholar. Stephanie talks about her fiery independent spirit, her determination and her devotion to her son Stephen and thanks further education every day.

Dr Bríd Ní Ghráinne has recently joined Maynooth University as Assistant Professor in International Justice
Bríd is an expert in Public International Law, particularly in the areas of Forced Migration and Human Rights. Previously, she was Principal Investigator on the ‘Safe Zones in International Law’ project funded by the Czech Ministry of Education at Masaryk University, Czech Republic. Bríd has published widely in leading journals such as Human Rights Law Review, International and Comparative Law Quarterly, Legal Studies, and International Journal of Refugee Law. Her monograph entitled 'Internally Displaced Persons and International Refugee Law' is forthcoming with Oxford University Press.

Dr Donal Coffey has recently published an article in the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly
This article looks at the way that constitutional law within the British Empire influenced the development of constitutional law in the United Kingdom in the inter-War period. The first section describes the contours of public law in British academia in the 1920s and 1930s. The second section analyses four core textbooks to chart the influence of imperial law on them. The final sections look at specific subject areas - citizenship, habeas corpus, and parliamentary sovereignty - and looks in details at how these core doctrines of British constitutional law were influenced by imperial law.

Dr Sinéad Ring has been appointed by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee TD to the Sentencing Guidelines and Information Committee of the Judicial Council.
Under the Judicial Council Act 2019, the Sentencing Guidelines and Information Committee is responsible for conducting research into sentencing practice in Ireland and preparing draft sentencing guidelines for the Board of the Judicial Council. Dr Ring's appointment is for four years. Her appointment was made following an independent selection process by the Public Appointments Service.

Dr Aisling McMahon publishes chapter on ‘Contractual Enforceability and Surrogacy Arrangements’ in edited collection ‘Contract Law and the Legislature’ published by Hart
Dr Aisling McMahon has published a chapter in a new edited collection entitled ‘Contractual Law and the Legislature: Autonomy, Expectations, and the Making of Legal Doctrine’ published by Hart Publishing and edited by Prof TT Arvind and Prof Jenny Steele (University of York). This volume revisits some of the key debates about the nature and shape of contract law, in light of the impact that statutes have had on its development. It is published as a companion to the ground-breaking Tort Law and the Legislature: Common Law, Statute and the Dynamics of Legal Change (Hart Publishing, 2012)
