Access to Medicines Ireland calls on Ireland to join WHO initiative for global equitable access to Covid19 healthcare)
Access to Medicines Ireland (AMI) calls on the Irish government to take action to support the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) ‘Solidarity Call to Action’ and endorse the Covid-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP).

Najaah Bodunrin (LLB) completes research assistant placement at Department of Law
Najaah Bodunrin, LLB student, completed a research assistant placement in the Department of Law over the summer. During this placement, Najaah assisted Dr Aisling McMahon with research related to patents on emerging medical technologies, including in the Covid-19 context. Alongside this, she provided research assistance on case law related to assisted dying. She also worked with Dr Amina Adanan researching new technologies as evidence of the commission of international crimes and helping with module preparation. Finally, she helped Dr Edana Richardson with the development of an online postgraduate module.

Dr Edana Richardson speaks at the inaugural Maynooth University Sustainable Finance Webinar
Dr Edana Richardson spoke at the inaugural Maynooth University Sustainable Finance Webinar, organised by the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute (MUSSI) on 17 September. Dr Richardson spoke about the use of Islamic finance in responsible finance activity. Dr Emmanuel Kypraios (Maynooth University Department School of Business) and Ali Sheridan (Maynooth University Department School of Business) also spoke at the webinar and spoke about catastrophe bonds and sustainable management, respectively.

David Rattigan (BCL Law and Business) completes research assistant placement at Department of Law
David Rattigan, BCL Law and Business student, completed a research assistant placement at Maynooth University’s Department of Law in June and August 2020. During this placement David worked with Dr David Doyle on a range of research assignments. David’s placement included research on the topic of insanity homicide defences in Ireland from 1922-1962, with the first six weeks being focused on Republic of Ireland cases, and the latter weeks focusing on Northern Ireland cases.

Department of Law awarded Bronze Athena SWAN for Gender Equality
The Department of Law has received an Athena SWAN Bronze Award, which recognises work undertaken to advance gender equality for staff and students in Higher Education. To achieve the award, institutions and departments are required to perform a critical self-reflection and analysis to identify both good practice and problem areas. Law is the third department at Maynooth University, and one of the first two law departments in the state, to apply for, and achieve, Athena SWAN accreditation.

David Mangan updates the International Association of Labour Law Journals
Dr. David Mangan spoke on the early lessons drawn from Covid-19’s impact on the workplace. Hosted by the Institute for Labour Law at KU Leuven, the virtual gathering was attended by labour law scholars around the world.

Socially-distanced restorative practices day held at IPS College
On 31st August 2020, members of the Maynooth University Department of Law collaborated with Irish Prison Service College (IPSC) tutors to organise a one-day workshop on restorative practices training. The day took place as part of a wider IPS project relating to its strategic commitments to explore and examine mechanisms for incorporating restorative justice principles throughout the service, and to include restorative principles in the training of staff, including all new recruits.
