Maynooth University Academic enrolled as member of Royal Irish Academy

Maynooth University’s Professor Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses from the Department of History was today admitted as a member to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA). He is among a group of 18 distinguished academics, including scientists, journalists and a cryptographer, who signed the Academy Roll Book earlier this afternoon.

There are now 580 members and 85 honorary members of the Academy in disciplines from the sciences, humanities and social sciences. Members of the Academy include President Michael D. Higgins; Baroness Nuala O’Loan; Philip Lane, Governor of the Central Bank; Susan Denham, Chief Justice; Mary Kelly, chairperson of An Bord Pleanála; and Roy Foster, historian and biographer of WB Yeats.    

Professor de Meneses, who is Portuguese, drew praise from the President of Portugal, Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa: “Upon learning that Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses has been admitted as a member of the prestigious Royal Irish Academy, I wish to congratulate heartily this excellent Portuguese researcher.”

“Although young, historian Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses has already a remarkable record as a researcher and lecturer of Contemporary History, and is the author of decisive works about Salazarism and Portugal’s participation in the Great War – works which deservedly attracted the attention and interest of the public at large.”

“He is an example of the talent and efforts of Portuguese researchers who live abroad and who gain notoriety for the exceptional quality of their scientific output. Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses’ admittance into the Royal Irish Academy is a source of pride to the national scientific community, a fact which I note with the greatest pleasure.”

Speaking on the announcement Maynooth University President, Professor Philip Nolan, said: “The University is delighted with this well-deserved recognition of Professor de Meneses as a world-class researcher in his field. On behalf of his colleagues here at Maynooth University, we extend our warmest congratulations on this wonderful achievement.”

Professor Peter Kennedy, President of the Royal Irish Academy, said: “Ireland should be immensely proud of these women and men who have brought international academic distinction to our country. As Members of the Academy, they will strengthen the Academy’s capacity to provide expert advice on Higher Education and Research policy.”

Acadóir Ollscoil Mhá Nuad glactha mar bhall d’Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann

Glacadh leis an Ollamh Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses ó Roinn na Staire inniu mar bhall d’Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann (RIA). Tá sé ar dhuine d’ocht n-acadóir déag mór le rá, eolaithe, iriseoirí agus cripteagrafaí ina measc, a shínigh Leabhar Rolla an Acadaimh níos luaithe inniu.
Tá breis agus 580 ball agus 85 ball oinigh ag an Acadamh anois ó dhisciplíní éagsúla - na heolaíochtaí, na daonnachtaí agus na heolaíochtaí sóisialta. I measc bhaill an Acadaimh tá an tUachtarán Micheál D. Ó hUigínn, an banbharún Nuala O’ Loan, Philip Lane, Gobharnóir an Bhainc Ceannais, Susan Denham, an Príomh-Bhreitheamh, Mary Kelly, cathaoirleach ar an mBord Pleanála, agus Roy Foster, staraí agus beathaisnéisí WB Yeats.

Is as an bPortaingéil é an tOllamh de Menes agus thug Uachtarán na Portaingéile, an Dr Marcelo Rebeloa de Sousa, moladh dó.  “Chuala mé gur glacadh le Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses mar bhall den acadamh clúiteach, Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann. Ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas ó chroí a dhéanamh leis an taighdeoir Portaingéalach iontach seo.”

“Cé go bhfuil sé óg, tá aitheantas bainte amach ag an staraí Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses mar thaighdeoir agus mar léachtóir le Stair Chomhaimseartha. Tá sé ina údar ar shaothair chinntitheacha maidir le Salazarachas agus rannpháirtíocht na Portaingéile sa Chéad Chogadh Domhanda - saothair a mheall aird agus spéis an phobail i gcoitinne agus é sin tuillte go maith acu.”

“Is eiseamláir é den chumas agus den iarracht atá déanta ag taighdeoirí ón bPortaingéil atá ina gcónaí thar lear agus a bhaineann cáil amach as an gcaighdeán eisceachtúil a bhaineann lena n-aschur eolaíochta. Is cúis bhróid do phobal náisiúnta na heolaíochta gur glacadh leis an Ollamh Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses ó Roinn mar bhall d’Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann agus cuireann sé gliondar orm é a chloisteáil.”

Ag labhairt faoin bhfógra, dúirt Uachtarán Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, an tOllamh Pilib Ó Nualláin: “Tá ríméad ar an Ollscoil leis an aitheantas seo atá bainte amach ag an Ollamh de Menese, mar thaighdeoir den chéad scoth ina réimse. Tá an t-aitheantas seo tuillte go maith aige. Ar son a chomhghleacaithe anseo in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, déanaim comhghairdeas ó chroí leis as an éacht iontach seo.”

Dúirt an tOllamh Peter Kennedy, Uachtarán Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann: “Ba cheart go mbeadh bród an domhain ar Éirinn as na mná agus as na fir seo a bhfuil oirirceas acadúil ar bhonn idirnáisiúnta tugtha acu chuig ár dtír. Mar bhaill den Acadamh, láidreoidh siad cumas an Acadaimh sainchomhairle maidir leis an bpolasaí a bhaineann le hArdoideachas agus le Taighde a chur ar fáil.
