Background

Professor Mary Gilmartin has recently received external funding for a four-year research project (MobiliseCare). The research project will be based at Maynooth University, Ireland. Its overall aim is to develop a new conceptualisation of migration based on how individuals, communities and organisations engage in and practice acts of care towards and with migrants.

We are now seeking to recruit PhD students to join the research team. There are two PhD projects:

  • PhD Project 1: Investigating the relationship between migration and care in Ireland, using a spatial ethnography methodology.
  • PhD Project 2: Investigating the national and transnational care work of two organisations based in Ireland. This project will seek to illuminate how organisations develop, maintain and rationalise care work as part of their overall activities.

The successful applicants will be enrolled in the Structured PhD programme in the Department of Geography and work under the primary supervision of Professor Mary Gilmartin (Department of Geography and Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute). They will receive an annual stipend of €19,000 plus tuition fees (for up to 4 years), together with equipment and additional research and travel expenses, and will be provided with a workspace.
