Biography

I completed a PhD in Geography at the University of Kentucky and worked at Nottingham Trent University and University College Dublin before joining Maynooth University in 2008. The main focus of my research is contemporary Irish migration and mobility. My book on Ireland and migration in the twenty-first century was published by Manchester University Press in 2015, and you can hear about the book in this interview with The History Show on RTE Radio 1. I am also Managing Editor of Social & Cultural Geography, a leading international geography journal.

I am currently working on two funded research projects, both of which focuses on the process of migrant integration. The first is 'Mapping processes of settlement and integration in contemporary Ireland', and it is funded by the Irish Research Council. The second, with Dr Clíodhna Murphy in Law, is funded by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission. Its title is 'Integration Policy in Ireland Through the Lens of Human Rights and Equality.'

Research Interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of political, cultural and social geography. My current research focuses on migration, in particular contemporary migration to and from Ireland. Bettina Migge (UCD) and I recently completed a 2-year study of recent migration to Ireland, funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and I continue to work on other migration-related research projects. In addition, I also engage in broader debates about the nature and practice of geography, informed by social theory. I am Managing Editor of Social & Cultural Geography, and am a member of the editorial boards of ACME, Geographical Journal, Journal of Geography in Higher Education, and Political Geography.

Research Projects

Title Role Description Start date End date Amount
Mapping processes of settlement and integration in contemporary Ireland PI This project addresses a key societal challenge for contemporary Ireland: the settlement and integration of new migrant communities. It uses mixed methods and community researchers to identify settlement and integration challenges for three groups (returning Irish; EU-13; and non-EU migrants) in two geographical locations (Dublin; Border), recognising that experiences and indicators of integration are socially and spatially variable. The project first focuses on two selected groups and regions, and measures levels and indicators of integration at sub-national levels using Census data. It also collaborates with community organisations to identify and measure other possible indicators of integration, and provides training for community organisations in accessing data for future research. Drawing from the example of Canada, recognised as demonstrating best practice in this area, the project next assesses the settlement services that may, or may not, contribute to successful integration. It maps settlement services for the three groups and two regions, and works to identify settlement service provision and gaps, again in collaboration with community organisations. The project uses this data on settlement and integration to develop policy recommendations in collaboration with community organisations, and presents these recommendations to a final seminar of key stakeholders. The project thus uses an innovative methodological approach in collaboration with community organisations, in order to arrive at evidence-based policy recommendations on integration, a key societal challenge in contemporary Ireland and across the EU.
