The MA in Business Translation and Intercultural Communication in English and Spanish is the result of a collaboration between the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Maynooth University and the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. The proposed programme offers students a variety of modules relating to translation, intercultural communication, business and organisational culture. The course will be ideally suited to graduates who are already proficient in English and Spanish, and who wish to maximise the applicability of these linguistic competencies to the demands of the contemporary international business workplace, including (but not limited to) the practice of applied translation.

The programme also offers prospective students unique opportunities for international mobility and relevant international work experience. Students will complete their first semester at Maynooth University, where they will take a variety of modules in Translation and Business; following this, they will relocate to Bilbao, where they will complete their second semester at the University of Deusto, taking a variety of additional modules that will complement and build upon the modules taken at Maynooth. Having completed both semesters of taught modules, students will then complete a three-month work placement at a company or organisation located in Ireland or Spain. This final component of the programme will be complemented by the completion of a final report and a viva voce exam, which will give students the opportunity to reflect upon their work placement in the context of the overall programme content and objectives.

Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to an Irish university primary degree level (NFQ Level 8 or equivalent honours degree).

Applicants must be able to demonstrate linguistic proficiency in both English and Spanish commensurate with CEFR level C1.1.

Minimum English language requirements:
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study. For information about English language tests accepted and required scores, please see here. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and International applicants..

Maynooth University's TOEFL code is 8850

Students will spend their first semester studying at Maynooth University, their second semester at the University of Deusto and their third semester on work placement at a company or organisation located in Ireland or Spain.

Course Duration: 1.5 years full-time

This programme will appeal to graduates with fluency in English and Spanish who wish to orient their career towards the practical application of their linguistic competencies in the context of international business. The programme is also ideally suited to business graduates with relevant linguistic competencies who wish to develop and hone highly marketable skills in translation and cross-cultural communication. For those who have already commenced a career in international business, the programme could represent an opportunity to significantly top up their existing skillset and qualifications, and to make themselves more marketable to prospective employers.
