Maynooth Academics enrolled as members of Royal Irish Academy

Maynooth academics Professor Stephen Buckley, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Professor Gerry Kearns, Department of Geography, were today admitted as members to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA). They are among a group of 28 elected for their exceptional contribution to the sciences, humanities and social sciences, including the poet Eavan Boland; public servant, Martin Mansergh; geologist Koen Verbruggen; and educationalist Áine Hyland.

There are now 591 members of the Academy and 87 honorary members, in disciplines across the sciences, humanities and social sciences. Members of the Academy include President Michael D. Higgins; Baroness Nuala O’Loan; Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford; and Nobel Laureate William C. Campbell.

Speaking on the announcement Maynooth University President, Professor Philip Nolan, said: “We at the University extend our sincere congratulations to our colleagues on this achievement. Membership of the Royal Irish Academy is a very significant honour for an academic, so I’m delighted to see them recognised in this way.”

Professor Peter Kennedy, President of the Royal Irish Academy, said: “We should be proud of these new Members of the Academy for the honour their work brings to this country and the impact of this research on the quality of the higher education provided by our universities.”

Glacadh leis an Ollamh Stephen Buckley, Roinn Matamaitice agus Staitisticí, agus leis an Ollamh Gerry Kearns, Roinn na Tíreolaíochta, inniu mar bhaill d’Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann (RIA).  Is beirt iad as ocht n-acadóir is fiche a roghnaíodh mar gheall ar an obair mhór atá déanta acu sna heolaíochtaí, sna daonnachtaí agus sna heolaíochtaí sóisialta. Ag labhairt faoin bhfógra, dúirt Uachtarán Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, an tOllamh Pilib Ó Nualláin: “Déanaimid comhghairdeas ó chroí lenár gcomhghleacaithe as an éacht seo. Is mór an onóir é d’acadóir ballraíocht d’Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann a bhaint amach, agus tá áthas an domhain orm go bhfuil aitheantas den chineál seo faighte acu.”

Dúirt an tOllamh Peter Kennedy, Uachtarán Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann: “Ba cheart dúinn a bheith bródúil as na Baill nua den Acadamh  mar gheall ar an onóir a thugann a gcuid oibre don tír seo agus an tionchar a bhíonn ag an taighde seo ar chaighdeán an ardoideachais a chuirtear ar fáil in ár n-ollscoileanna.”
