Dr Aisling McMahon has published a peer reviewed chapter entitled “Regulatory Authorities and Decision-Making in Health Research: The Institutional Dimension” in the Cambridge Handbook for Health Research Regulation edited by Prof Graeme Laurie, Dr Edward Dove, Dr Agonomi Ganguli-Mitra, Dr Catriona McMillan, Dr Emily Postan, Dr Nayha Sethi and Annie Sorbie.
Dr McMahon’s chapter focuses on the role of institutional frameworks on decision-making outcomes in the health research context. Drawing on institutional theories, it argues that institutional frameworks play a considerable influence on end outcomes of decision-making in various contexts. Accordingly, the chapter argues that institutional factors and contexts should be carefully scrutinised when adopting policy or legal changes, and particularly when drafting new provisions or guidance to be applied in any legal or regulatory context, including in the health research regulation context.
The chapter is published open access and is available to read here.
Dr McMahon is an Assistant Professor of Law in Maynooth University Department of Law where she teaches modules including Patents, Health and Biotechnologies, and Contemporary Issues in Medicine and the Law.
