Professor Doherty spoke at a special symposium at the University of Málaga’s Department of Labour Law and Social Security
The seminar was titled: "1st International Seminar on gender and disadvantaged groups: discrimination in employment, the use of digital algorithms and artificial intelligence" (. Prof Doherty spoke on 'Conceptual clarifications on artificial intelligence, algorithms, robotics and big data: their regulation at national and international level'. The seminar was organised by Dra Lucía Aragüez Valenzuela, with the help of Miguel Ángel Gómez Salado. Both Lucía and Miguel have been visiting researchers at Maynooth University.

The Department of Law welcomes Dr Mariana Velasco-Rivera
Before joining Maynooth University Department of Law, Mariana was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Chair of Comparative Constitutionalism held by Professor Ran Hirschl at the University of Göttingen, Germany (2019-2021) and an Emile Noël Fellow at NYU School of Law (2020-2021).

Dr Fergus Ryan contributes to research on universal free access to contraception
A Framework Report on Universal Free Access to Contraception features and builds upon research carried out by Dr Fergus Ryan of Maynooth University Department of Law. The research, carried out for DHR Communications and the Irish Family Planning Association, and funded by Bayer, including a scoping report on Human Rights and legal frameworks relating to contraception in Ireland as well as draft legislation on the topic.

Department of Law colleagues Marder, Lapouge, Garrihy and Brandon publish article on open prisons
In September 2021, four researchers from the Maynooth University Department of Law – Dr. Ian Marder (Assistant Professor in Criminology), Magali Lapouge (Research Assistant), Dr. Joe Garrihy (Assistant Professor in Criminology) and Dr Avril Brandon (Assistant Professor in Criminology) published a new article in the (open access) Prison Service Journal.

The Department of Law welcomes Dr Hubert Smekal
Hubert Smekal joins the Department of Law, Maynooth University after working as an Assistant Professor and a Senior Researcher for the last 16 years at Masaryk University, Brno, Czechia. Hubert studied Law and European studies in Brno and Bologna. His research focuses on the interplay between law and politics, especially concerning the EU, courts and human rights issues. Hubert was awarded a year-long Fulbright Post-Doc Research Fellowship (2010–2011), which he spent studying courts and judicial politics at UC Berkeley.

Dr Aisling McMahon & Dr Edana Richardson presented their research on the role of shareholders and corporate decision-making over patented health-technologies at the Society of Legal Scholars Conference
On 3rd September 2021, Dr Aisling McMahon & Dr Edana Richardson presented a paper at the international Society of Legal Scholars conference 2021. Their paper was entitled ‘Patents, Corporate Decision-Making and Shareholders’ and was presented at a panel on Intellectual Property - Innovation and health crises.

Dr Joe Garrihy publishes an article in the British Journal of Criminology
Dr Garrihy’s article, “‘That Doesn’t Leave You’: Psychological Dirt and Taint in Prison Officers’ Occupational Cultures and Identities”, has been published in the British Journal of Criminology .
