My MU experience - Law student Adam

Lucan native, Adam O’Carroll, is a final year LLB Bachelor of Laws student at Maynooth University. He reflects on his experiences as a Law student and Student Ambassador.

“I attended many open days in my final two years of secondary school. At Maynooth University it was clear that the students and staff were more than willing to address any outstanding queries that I had about transitioning to third level education. They were keen to highlight all of the supports that the University offers to students, particularly first years, from the Laptop Loan Scheme to the Student Budgeting Advice Office, the Peer Mentorship Support schemes in place, the Careers Service, and so on.

The best advice that I would give to students applying to the CAO is to research the course thoroughly by visiting the university website, the campus, contacting anyone that they may already know studying on the course, reaching out to the academic staff as well with any questions they may have. Be very familiar with the degree course structure.

Much of the community-based work that I am involved in with the University is centred around my role as a Student Ambassador. I have been part of the Student Ambassador Programme for the past three years, having successfully applied back in May 2021. In addition to this, I have been an Orientation Leader for the past three years. I have welcomed hundreds of new students to the University on campus tours and at Open Days.

In my view, one of the most important things that Maynooth University does very well is the emphasis that it places on each student gaining a holistic experience, to complement the skillsets that they gain from their degree. For instance, some of my greatest friends and most fond memories stem from my community-based work as Treasurer on the committee of the Maynooth University Law Society, the Maynooth University Free Legal Advice Centre Society (FLAC) as Secretary, and the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) as Secretary.
Final bit of advice? Visit. You really can’t get a proper sense of a university campus and its people unless you visit it.”

The Student Ambassador Programme provides current Maynooth University students with the opportunity to provide information about their degree course, subjects, campus facilities and life at Maynooth University to prospective applicants, parents and guardians.
