Welcome from Head of Department

Tuesday, September 13, 2016 - 16:30

A warm welcome to our incoming First Arts cohort, to returning students in Second and Third Arts, and to our new Masters and PhD students.

For a "student" view of our Department and our programmes why not have a scroll through the graduates section on this website.

If you would like to find out about the kind of high quality work produced by undergraduates in their final year check out this year's top student theses. The Justine Horgan award for best B.A. thesis in 2016 will be jointly awarded to Danielle O'Connell for "Nice Day for a white wedding" and Deirdre Campbell for  "Queering Irish Nationalism."  Congratulations to both.

We are delighted to let you know that over the past few months a number of our students have been successful in competitions for prestigious awards:  Hassan Moctar won the National University of Ireland Travelling Fellowship;  John Brown a doctoral student won a Fulbright Visiting fellowship visit at Tulane University, New Orleans; Richard Healy and Philip Finn, both also doctoral students, secured Irish Research Council funding and Joshua Savage an incoming doctoral student, has been awarded a John & Pat Hume scholarship by MU.  In addition, a graduating student Keith Rowan has been shortlisted for the International Undergraduate Awards 2016. More on these awards soon in the news section.

Professor Linda Connolly  who was an undergraduate and postgraduate student in the Department of Sociology MU in the 1990s, has recently been appointed Director of the MU Social Science Institute (MUSSI).  Linda will be spearheading MU's social science research strategy and we wish her well in her new role.

Check out the year handbooks for more details on this year's exciting and stimulating academic programme.  All of these are available on our website (under the undergraduates or postgraduates sections).
