Changes in post-primary teaching requirements

Thursday, November 28, 2013 - 00:00

Maynooth University and the Sociology Department have learned that the Teaching Council has just published its new registration requirements for post primary teachers. As these will come into effect in January 2017, they will have an impact on any student planning to start the new (2 year) postgraduate teaching programmes in 2015.

The core requirements are a level 8 degree, with at least 60 credits in the relevant subject.  However there are also specific requirements for many subjects.  For example, to register as a teacher of history, the applicant must have taken at least 15 credits of Irish History.  To register in Biology, 40 credits of specific areas are required.   Because of these specific requirements, any student thinking of teaching would be well advised to keep these in mind when choosing optional modules.

This has an impact on a student currently in the penultimate year of an undergraduate degree, who is considering applying to enter a teacher education programme in 2015 or later.
