Sensemaking and the Influencing Factors on Farmer Decision-making

Dr. Michael Hayden, Assistant Professor and Lecturer in Accounting, has just published an article titled Sensemaking and the Influencing Factors on Farmer Decision-making in the Journal of Rural Studies with co-authors Dr Ruth Mattimoe (Dublin City University) and Professor Lisa Jack (University of Portsmouth). This article provides interesting insights for policymakers and farm advisors on the influencing factors on the strategic financial decisions that farmers undertake. If policymakers take these influencing factors into account when formulating policy on how financial support is allocated to farmers to encourage sustainable food production, more effective policies may be developed. For farm advisors (agricultural consultants and rural accountants) a deeper understanding of what factors are important to farmers, within various farm types and in specific farm expansion decision-making situations, may assist them in improving the design and delivery of their advisory services to clients.
