The QSA*Net team was pleased to host a panel session on “Qualitative Secondary Analysis in Ireland: Challenges and Opportunities” at the Sociological Association of Ireland Annual Conference 2025, held in Cork on May 8–9.
This session brought together national and international speakers to explore the emerging field of Qualitative Secondary Analysis (QSA) and its relevance within Irish social science. Our panel featured contributions that addressed these issues directly:
-Professor Kahryn Hughes (University of Leeds) spoke on The Ethics of Qualitative Secondary Analysis, drawing attention to the responsibilities and complexities involved in data re-use.
-Dr. Rong Bao and Professor Jane Gray (Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute) presented new findings from the QSA*Net project in their talk, Opportunities for Qualitative Secondary Analysis in Ireland: First Findings from the QSA*Net Project, offering evidence on researchers’ knowledge, experiences, and support needs.
-Professor Rosalind Edwards (University of Southampton) discussed The Value of Qualitative Secondary Analysis of Archived Data – Now and Into the Future, highlighting the long-term benefits and research potential of QSA.
The session was chaired and reported by Dr. Lisa Moran (Technological University of the Shannon), a key project partner.
We are grateful to the Sociological Association of Ireland for providing a platform to share and discuss these timely issues. The QSA*Net team looks forward to continuing our work to promote open, ethical, and impactful qualitative research in Ireland.
