Prof Michael Doherty presented a paper at the Labour Law Research Network Conference in Warsaw, Poland, which was part of the presentation of the book The Cambridge Handbook of Labor in Competition Law.

The chapter,  “Competition Law, Cartels and Collective Bargaining: An Irish Goodbye?” examines how the Irish ‘voluntarist’, common law system of employment relations has responded when competition law and collective representation rights are at odds. It focuses, particularly, on some paradigmatic disputes and reflects on how Irish law generally views the restriction on ‘economic freedom’ inherent in collective representation rights.

The collection brought together, and began to systematise thinking across, jurisdictions on the competition law aspects of work in the so-called gig economy. However, the book has the deeper motivation of beginning to generate comparative and international perspectives on the nascent normative broadening withing competition law itself- which has work, workers and smaller player at or near its centre.

The collection is edited by Sanjukta Paul,  Shae McCrystal and Ewan McGaughey.

Prof Doherty is Full Professor of Law at Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology and lectures courses to all first year law students on Introduction to Law, as well as Employment Law to LLB students.
