Gene Carolan, a PhD Candidate at Maynooth University Department of Law, recently presented at the Irish Centre for Human Rights' Annual Doctoral Seminar from 27 - 30 April 2015.

The Irish Centre for Human Rights is one of the world's premier university-based institutions for the study and promotion of human rights and humanitarian law, and has built a thriving community of doctoral researchers based on its global reputation for excellence in the field of human rights teaching, research and advocacy. Doctoral students from the Centre host an annual research seminar each year, where the students present on aspects of their work to a panel of academic experts. This year, the panel included Prof. Yutaka Arai of the Brussels School of International Studies (University of Kent), Dr. Annyssa Bellal of international NGO, Geneva Call, and Dr. Jeroen Temperman of the Erasmus School of Law.

Gene presented aspects of his ongoing research to this panel and stressed the importance of precisely written human rights guarantees and inclusive transitional justice mechanisms in sustaining emerging processes of peace. The presentation encouraged lively discussion with Prof. Michael O'Flaherty, Director of the Centre and former Vice-Chairperson of the UN Human Rights Committee,  and Prof. William Schabas, Chairman of the Centre and author of more than 20 books and 300 journal articles, both of whom had been involved in drafting different aspects of the Lomé Agreement in Sierra Leone, which is a case study in Gene's doctoral thesis.
