Navigating Change: Irish Unions and the New Landscape of Collective Bargaining

Monday, January 29, 2024 - 16:15

Dr Valentina Paolucci (Maynooth Business School) and Professor Bill Roche (UCD College of Business) co-authored two original articles stemming from CODEBAR, a EU Commission-funded project coordinated by the University of Amsterdam.

The articles provide detailed insights into Ireland's shifting collective bargaining and union strategies landscape. Despite the trend toward bargaining decentralization post-global financial crisis and the dissolution of national social partnership, Irish unions have successfully steered through these changes. Specifically, the studies reveal how unions have employed effective mechanisms to coordinate company-level bargaining, challenging the narrative of decentralization as detrimental to union strength. Dr Paolucci’s work provides an essential understanding of the dynamic interplay between union strategies and labour market policies, highlighting a nuanced perspective on the role of unions in (re)shaping institutions and the significance of collective bargaining in protecting working conditions.
