Maynooth at the Annual Conference of the Irish Association of Law Teachers

Maynooth University Department of Law was well represented at this year’s Annual Conference of the Irish Association of Law Teachers in Athlone. The event took place this year from the 23rd to the 25th November.  Most notably, doctoral candidate Emer Shannon received a postgraduate scholarship from the IALT in respect of her paper on “Self Regulation vs Governmental Regulation: What is Ireland's Response to Image-Based Sexual Abuse Following the Dispatches Revelations?”
 
Six other speakers from Maynooth presented papers at the conference:
- Dr Amina Adanan, “How effective is universal criminal jurisdiction in prosecuting atrocity crimes committed in Syria?”
- Dr Ollie Bartlett, “Teaching supranational policy advocacy skills”;
- Professor Michael Doherty, “The Rise of ‘Gig Work’, the Scope of Employment Protection, and the Role of Trade Unions”;
- Dr Neil Maddox, “Children of the Dead: Posthumous Conception and the Limits of Consent”;
- Dr Clíodhna Murphy (with Dr Desmond Ryan, Trinity College Dublin),  “Work, Dignity and Non-Citizens in the Irish Constitutional Order: A Critical Analysis of the Supreme Court’s Decision in NVH”;
- Dr Fergus Ryan “Disrupting the Binary: Is there space for non-binary gender identities in Irish law?”.
 
As part of the conference, Professor Michael Doherty convened and chaired a panel on “Doctoral Studies in Law: Reflections from the Coalface” and represented Maynooth University at the University Heads of School meeting.
 
Maynooth University PhD alumni Dr Deirdre McGowan and Dr Gene Carolan (both of DIT) also spoke at the conference, with Dr McGowan being elected the new President of the Association.
 
Maynooth University has a long and proud association with the IALT. Three of our staff members (Professor Michael Doherty, Professor Claire Hamilton and Dr Fergus Ryan) have served as Presidents of the IALT while staff members have been active in the Association’s Council over several years.”
