Law Lecturer Discusses Referendum Outcome on Newstalk

Tuesday, June 2, 2015 - 11:00

Dr Fergus Ryan of Maynooth University Department of Law appeared on Newstalk radio on Saturday, 23 May 2015 to discuss the constitutional referendum on marriage.

Speaking to Global Village’s Ciara McDonagh, Dr Ryan joined an array of guests, including Dr John Murray of the Iona Institute, comedian Tara Flynn, Eileen Gamble of the INTO LGBT group, and Max Krzyzanowski of LGBT Noise to discuss the historic verdict and its implications. The panel discussed, in particular, the impact of social media in the campaign and youth engagement in the debate. The programme featured the historic announcement from Dublin Castle of the referendum result as well as a live on-air marriage proposal by regular presenter Dil Wickremasinghe to her fiancée, Anne-Marie (who said yes!).

A podcast of the interview is available online.

Dr Ryan lectures in in Family Law on the LLB and in Gender, Sexuality and the Law and Marriage and the Law on the LLM (Global Legal Studies) programme offered by Maynooth University Department of Law.
