The Department of Ancient Classics is delighted to announce the award of a Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers to Dr Michael Williams, for the academic year 2015-16. The fellowship, provided by the Humboldt Foundation in Germany, will enable Dr Williams to pursue research at the Goethe-Universität at Frankfurt-am-Main, where he will work in collaboration with Prof. Dr Hartmut Leppin.

The research project for which Dr Williams has been funded will look at the development of the practice and the language of Christian asceticism in the late fourth and early fifth centuries AD, and especially in the lives and writings of Paulinus of Nola, Sulpicius Severus and Augustine of Hippo.

Dr Williams would also like to thank Maynooth University for its award of a sabbatical year to undertake this research.
