Dr. Bryan Roche of the Department of Psychology at MU was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Chichester on October 22nd for his long standing support for quality postgraduate research within the Department of Psychology.  Dr. Roche has worked closely over several years with members of academic staff and postgraduates at the University of Chichester, providing mentoring and practical support for the conduct of research into the development of methods to enhance intellectual skills in children.  The award was presented at a ceremony at Chichester Cathedral by Vice Chancellor Professor Jane Longmore, following a citation speech by Dr. Ian Tyndall.  In his speech, Dr. Roche emphasised the importance of creativity, risk taking and collegiality among members of the research community and warned against the idea that individual academics can go it alone in a competitive race against one another to academic excellence.  Recalling the philosophies of Bertrand Russell and his now deceased colleague Prof. Maria Ruiz, Dr Roche stressed to the new graduates the importance of being able to work hard, but also of only doing so when it is necessary to produce something creative and worthwhile.
