Exploring class in IRELAND

There is renewed interest in social class in Ireland and next week at the Feile na Pobail Michael Pierse from Queens will be launching his book. The launch will include reflection on literature and history including from Paula Meehan.

Fergal Finnegan from the Maynooth University Department of Adult & Community Education will be there to discuss his research on social class and higher education.

Speakers including Dr Heather Laird of UCC and Michael Pierse at QUB will discuss Irish working-class life in history, literature and politics. This will be followed by the Belfast launch of Michael Pierse’s book, ‘A History of Irish Working-Class Writing’ which provides a wide ranging and authoritative chronicle of the writing of Irish working-class experience, charting representations of Irish working-class life from eighteenth-century rhymes and songs to the novels, plays and poetry of working-class experience in contemporary Ireland.
