Interdisciplinary doctoral research by Dr Nicola Mountford

Traditionally the PhD has been about becoming an expert in one particular aspect of a single discipline.  More recently, however, funders have encouraged the establishment of broader, interdisciplinary PhD programmes to increase innovation, creativity and employability. But do these interdisciplinary PhD programmes work? And if so, how and why? This study investigates the lived experiences of 27 students in three European Union funded eHealth research training networks to answer this question. It proposes a framework for interdisciplinary programme design that extracts value from the interdisciplinary process, motivates students throughout the interdisciplinary programme journey, and facilitates relationships both within and external to the programme. Dr Nicola Mountford, lecturer at the School of Business, Maynooth University.
