Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta (1927-2016)

The priest, poet and Irish language scholar Pádraig Ó Fiannachta died on Friday the 15th of July. Born in Ballymore in County Kerry, Ó Fiannachta was ordained at Maynooth in 1953. He was appointed Professor of early Irish at Maynooth in 1960, followed by Modern Irish in 1982. He taught at the University until his retirement in 1992, when he returned to Kerry to serve as parish priest in An Daingean.
Ó Fiannachta was the author of numerous publications including a translation of the bible, An Bíobla Naofa, published in 1982. He also continued the work of Father Paul Walsh, publishing the catalogue of the Gaelic manuscripts held by the Russell Library at Maynooth. 
Ó Fiannachta also served as editor of Irisleabhar Mha Nuad for over forty years.
