Ireland’s first ever residential Autumn Criminology School for Doctoral Researchers - funded by the Irish Research Council - was held at the stunning location of Blackwater Castle in Co. Cork from the 25 – 30 September 2016.  Run over five days, the residential Criminology School involved 25 PhD researchers and was led by highly esteemed Irish and international criminologists with input from key policy makers and NGOs.

Dr Claire Hamilton delivered one of the Masterclasses for the School which drew from her experiences of carrying out comparative criminological research for her PhD thesis ‘Reconceptualising Penality: An Examination of the “New Punitiveness” in Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand’. Suzanne Scott, a PhD candidate at the Department of Law, attended the School as a criminological doctoral researcher.

Claire is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law. Prior to joining Maynooth University she worked for several years as a lecturer in criminology in Dublin Institute of Technology and Queen's University Belfast. She has published widely in various national and international legal and criminological journals including the British Journal of Criminology, the European Journal of Criminology, and the European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research. Most recently, she was one of the editors of the Routledge Handbook of Irish Criminology.

Suzanne holds a John and Pat Hume Doctoral Studentship; her PhD project explores victim perspectives of human trafficking for forced labour and criminal activities in Ireland.
