MU congratulates 19 recipients of Government of Ireland Awards

    Maynooth University is delighted to announce that 19 researchers have been selected for the 2020 Government of Ireland Postgraduate and Postdoctoral schemes, announced today by the Irish Research Council (IRC).

    The Government of Ireland Awards represent a total investment of over €21 million in almost 300 early career research projects across all academic disciplines.

    Maynooth researchers receiving awards today will conduct research into a wide range of topics from drug therapies, Parkinson’s disease and stroke rehabilitation, to sinkhole environments, solar events in nearby galaxies and new learning approaches in primary education.

    Welcoming this year’s awardees, the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD said: “Across higher education, enterprise, civil society and the public sector, expert knowledge and skills is a critical need for our present and our future. The awards announced today support a pipeline of research talent which will be at the forefront of addressing the many challenges and opportunities we face.”

    MU Awardees and research projects:

    • Bernadette Phillips - The Montessori School as a healing environment: Translating childhood trauma research into effective trauma-informed educational practice.
    • Blake McGrane Corrigan - Statistical modelling applied to the spatio-temporal dynamicsof the Heliothine moth.
    • Clara Evans - Novel anti-cancer organometallics; synergistic DNA damaging and photo-triggered CO releasing therapeutics.
    • Darren Beirne - Combination chemo-therapy: a modern approach to target colorectal cancer with dual-action Tyrosine Kinase inhibitorPt(IV) based drugs.
    • Dawn Higgins – The development of a Boston process-based neuropsychological assessment or the screening and diagnosis of dementia for use with individuals with low and/or no literacy, such as the Travelling Population of Ireland.
    • Georgina Perryman - The future of community heritage in Dublin: Place-making and productive nostalgia in response to urban transformation.
    • Jack Callan - Geographies of Abortion Access in Ireland.
    • Lilian Nwanze - The invisible burden: The emotional dimensions of racialization on the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Learner in the Irish Further Education System.
    • Luke Edward Brennan - The design, synthesis & biological evaluation of theranostic agents targeting multi-drug resistant bacteria.
    • Nathan Fox - Anyonic quantum computation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.
    • Peadar Kearney - Blurred Boundaries and Fluid Selves: Post-Identity Francophone Cinema.
    • Peter Shannon - Schubert’s Ninth Symphony: a composer’s ability to heal. (A conductor’s reading of Schubert’s Ninth symphony through the prism of Hans Georg Gadamer)
    • Sandra-Carina Noble - Accelerating stroke rehabilitation using iterative learning applied via a brain-computer interface.
    • Siobhán Buckley - “Contrasts in Tolerance?”: A cross-sectoral analysis of punitiveness in the adult and youth criminal justice systems of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands 1990 – 2015.
    • Tian Yu - The Electrochemical Detection of Pesticides and their Removal from water using Electro-Fenton and Electrocoagulation.
    • Veronica Barry - An examination of Nazi propaganda directed at women of the neutral states from 1933-45.
    • John Brown - Democratisation and post-neoliberal citizenship in Latin America: Lessons from Bolivia and Venezuela.
    • Kevin Tracey - AMERGIN: Analysing Macaronic Early-Modern Readers by Gathering Irish Networks (1575-1675)
    • Siobhán Barrett - A Triad of Medical Glossaries

    Rachaidh taighdeoirí Mhá Nuad ar bronnadh gradaim orthu inniu i mbun taighde ar réimse leathan d’ábhair lena 
    n-áirítear teiripí drugaí, galar Parkinson, athshlánú ó stróc, timpeallachtaí ina bhfuil pollta slogaide, eachtraí gréine sna 
    réaltraí taobh linn agus cuir chuige fhoghlama nua sa bhunoideachas.
