From June, 23 until June, 30 the Department of Law, in cooperation with the Maynooth Centre for European and Eurasian Studies, the second international Jean Monnet Summer School “The EU and Human Rights in a Time of Crisis”, part of the JM Module financed under the Erasmus+ programme. This year the Summer School focused on “Balancing Economic Freedoms and Human Rights in the European Union”. The Summer school is coordinated by Dr. Delia Ferri, in conjunction with Prof John O'Brennan.
The summer school explored from various angles the interplay between economic freedoms and human rights within the European Union, reflected on the role of human rights protection in EU trade relationship with other countries and discussed contemporary challenges of the EU. It was opened by a keynote speech of Prof. Michael O’Flaherty, Director of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, and concluded by a lectio magistralis of Ms Emily O’Reilly, European Ombudsman. Both of them discussed the role of the EU as a key promoter of human rights, within its own boundaries and beyond, offering an insightful perspective.
The summer school offered an extremely rich programme of guest lectures and seminars. Guest lectures included: Dr. Filippo Fontanelli (University of Edinburg), Prof. Caterina Sganga (CEU-Budapest), Prof. Marise Cremona (EUI), Prof. Com O’Cinneide (UCL), Prof. Georgi Dimitrov (University of Sofia). The Summer School was characterized by a combination of different teaching strategies and activities, and students had the opportunity to talk to practicioners from different fields, including Declan O’Dempsey, BL (Cloisters and Chambers), Avv. Sondra Faccio (Santosuosso Avvocati), Angel Bello Cortes (Fragomen).
