Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice at the School of Law and Criminology Dr Cian Ó Concubhair has published a peice on RTE Brainstorm entitled 'Is the proposed 'Fagin's law' an actual change to Irish law?'.

In this piece for RTÉ Brainstorm, Cian examines the recently proposed 'Fagin's law' (Criminal Justice (Engagement of Children in Criminal Activity) Bill 2023) which the Minister for Justice claims will newly criminalise the grooming of children into a life of crime. This piece argues that the new Bill does not, in its current form, add any new substantive offence to the criminal law, as the rules of complicity and inchoate liability already cover the activity targeted. The piece warns against excessive reliance on symbolic 'new' laws, in place of meaningful investment in policing and social care capacity.
