Ethan Shattock recently won the Philip Leith Prize for his paper which he presented at the 2023 British and Irish Law Education and Technology Association (BILETA) conference. This conference was held in Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Amsterdam Law and Technology Institute) from 13-14 April 2023.

Ethan’s paper was entitled ‘Knowledge of Deception: Intermediary Liability for Disinformation Under Ireland’s Electoral Reform Act.’ His paper identified key provisions of Ireland’s Electoral Reform Act that apply legal responsibilities for online platforms to tackle the spread of misleading electoral communications. His paper applied a critical assessment of how these provisions are likely to interact with European standards surrounding the right to freedom of expression, the right to free and fair elections, and intermediary liability for harmful content. Ethan will publish this paper in 2023.

Ethan Shattock is a Doctoral Scholar at Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology. His PhD research applies a human rights perspective to European and domestic legislation in the fields of online disinformation and ‘harmful but legal’ content. Ethan is supervised by Dr Maria Murphy and Prof Aisling McMahon.
