Dr. Ian Marder wins Maynooth University Teaching Award

In June 2022, Maynooth University President, Prof. Eeva Leinonen, and Dean of Teaching and Learning, Dr. Alison Hood, presented Dr Ian Marder with the Maynooth University Teaching Award for the 2021-22 academic year. The aim of these university-wide awards is “to recognise those individuals and teams that demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching that has a transformative impact on student learning, engagement, and participation”.
 
Ian was nominated for the award for his work to develop and deliver the MA Dialogue programme on the MA in Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice, which he directs. This involves using restorative practices to build relationships with and among students and staff that are conducive to learning and support. 2021-22 was the second year that the MA Dialogue is running, and the project is currently being evaluated, with the support of participating students.
 
The 2021-22 year saw two team awards and five individual awards won. Each award includes a prize of a €2000 grant to be used to support further work in teaching development.
 
Ian has also published and spoken on his use restorative practices in teaching and learning to enable student participation in class and to involve students in redesigning a module, among other applications.
