RTE Brainstorm has published an article co-written by Dr. Ian Marder and Annmarie Maher. Dr. Marder is a Lecturer in Criminology in the Department of Law; Annmarie Maher recently completed her LLB in the department, her dissertation for which focused on legal developments concerning the children of imprisoned parents in Ireland. She will now study for an MA in Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice.

The article concerned the children of imprisoned parents. It discussed the research regarding the impact of parental imprisonment and explored recent efforts in Ireland and across Europe to provide greater support for this highly marginalised group. The article also notes that these children require support to maintain their relationship with their imprisoned parents (if it is in the interests of the child to do so), as well as dedicated services to cope with the disruption to their lives on the outside.

You can read the full article here. Dr. Marder touches on issues surrounding the children of imprisoned parents in his module Introduction to Criminology, available to 4th year LLB students at Maynooth. His previous articles in RTE Brainstorm focused on youth diversion and restorative justice.

He was also recently interviewed for an RTE article regarding the role of true crime in popular culture and appeared on Today FM earlier in August to discuss the development of restorative justice in Ireland.
