Dr Donal Coffey writes opinion piece about the freedom to practice religion for The Journal

On 3rd August, Dr Donal Coffey wrote an opinion piece for The Journal entitled ‘The freedom to practice religion must be respected – including communions and confirmations’.
 
The recent controversy about governmental guidelines on communions and confirmations raises the question of what role the Constitution should play in our civic life. Does it merely act as a barrier to legislation, or does it set standards of civic behaviour that should inform governmental decision-making?
 
Dr Donal Coffey is an Assistant Professor in Law at Maynooth University Department of Law.
