Biography | Louise is currently a PhD Candidate at Maynooth University with the Department of Geography. Her research focuses on the legal geographies of the LGBT Rights Movement in African States and the subsequent sites of vulnerability and resistance created. This research was awarded the prestigious Irish Research Council Government of Ireland postgraduate scholarship which funds the development of early research careers.
Prior to Maynooth University, Louise worked with the Irish Red Cross in a number of roles concerned with humanitarian diplomacy and the dissemination of humanitarian law. During this time Louise also undertook her LLM in International and Comparative Law at Trinity College Dublin where she graduated top of her class. Her dissertation focused on the need to utilise the norms of humanitarian law in assessing refugee status applications from ‘war-torn’ states. In the past, Louise has also worked with the Irish Refugee Council and maintains a keen interest in refugee rights. In addition, Louise holds an MSc in Humanitarian Action from University College Dublin, during which she spent a semester at Universitie Catholique de Louvain-de-Neuve, Belgium and three months at Monash Asia Institute, Monash University, Australia, before commencing field work in East Timor. Thesis Working Title | Making Music and Making Place: Mapping Musical Practice and Metaphor in Ireland |
Supervisor | Professor Karen Till |
Co-Supervisor | |
Linked Research Group | |
Biography | I graduated from Maynooth University in 2014 with a B.A. degree in Geography and Music. I then went on to complete the M.A. in Geography at Maynooth, graduating in October 2015. Here, I became interested in Art and Geography, having followed the Art, Culture and Environment stream of the programme. For my dissertation, ‘Music and Place: Insights from Musical Practice in Carlow’, I researched musical practice in my home town of Carlow, combining my own musical work with Geography, through performance/composition ethnographies and community/deep mapping. I decided to pursue PhD studies to continue my research of artistic and musical practice in Ireland, particularly in the context of smaller towns and settings, and to extend my research methods to include place-based original musical composition. I applied for the John and Pat Hume Scholarship, and was very fortunate to receive the award. I am really excited about continuing to build an understanding of the relationship between music, art and place, and feel privileged to do so at Maynooth, where I have always really enjoyed my studies, and been supported and encouraged throughout.
Outside of Geography, I am a professional musician, and perform regularly as a soloist, ensemble and orchestral musician, in session recording, and as a choral accompanist. I have performed across Ireland as well as in parts of the UK and Europe. I was classically trained through the Royal Irish Academy of Music in piano, violin and flute, and pursued piano performance as my first study instrument during my undergraduate degree; I now perform in numerous styles and genres, including classical, jazz, traditional, folk, and country. I teach music to children and adults, and work as a choral accompanist and facilitator to a community music organisation in Carlow, in addition to my performing work. I really enjoy working in community settings, and so am involved in a voluntary capacity in several musical ensembles in Carlow, working with children, teenagers, and adults of all ages. Through the PhD, I really look forward to collaborating with my existing musical colleagues and friends, and to forging new connections with other performers, composers and organisations. |

I graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2016 with a B.A. in Environmental Science and subsequently went on to complete an M.Sc. in Climate Change in 2018. Both of the research projects I under took dealt with various aspects of hydrology, my undergraduate project focusing on well water quality and the geological features that impact them. My master's thesis focused on TBRG accuracy and how they were affected by wind speed and direction, the amount and form of precipitation. Following graduating in 2018 I briefly worked in as an Environmental and Administrative Technician, the role included the preparation of environmental impact assessments, costing and quotes for domestic/industrial oil spill cleanup and restoration work. I joined ICARUS PhD community of students in Dec 2019 and I was awarded a 4-year studentship funded by the A4 project (Aigéin, Aeráid, agus athrú Atlantaigh). My work will focus on understanding Atlantic variability and its connection to the Irish shelf advancing knowledge of Irish sea-level change in an Atlantic context; and development of predictive capacity on decadal timescales.

Thesis Working Title | Ensembles reconstructions of Daily River Flows (1871 - present) |
Supervisor | Dr. Conor Murphy |
Co-Supervisor | Dr. Tom Matthews (Liverpool John Moores University) |
Linked Research Group | ICARUS |
Biography | In 2004, Paul graduated from Maynooth University with a B.Sc. Honours degree in experimental physics. He subsequently completed an M.Sc. Research Masters in fluid dynamics, specifically studying the heat flow characteristics of water at it’s maximum density. Statistical analysis of experimental results, complemented by the use of computational fluid dynamic modelling, was an important component of his research. In 2012, he commenced a taught M.Sc. Programme in Maynooth University in climate change. His thesis work involved the generation of a decision centric approach to climate change adaptation, with modelling river catchment rainfall-runoff being central to the study. In September 2017 Paul commenced his PhD in Maynooth university. His research will entail reconstructing historic daily river flows values for 38 river catchments in Ireland using analog approaches to downscale reanalysis data. Reconstructed flow series will be used to demonstrate their utility for spatial and temporal drought analysis in the water sector and for contextualising recent flooding events in Ireland. |
