Musicking a PhD

Our most recent new doctor is Dr Aoife Kavanagh for “Making Music and Making Place: Mapping Musical Practice in Irish Small Towns”.   This study of music-making included musical composition of its own as part of the reflection upon and interpretation of results; a first for Maynooth Geography.

Congratulations to Aoife, to her supervisors Professor Karen Till and Dr Daithí Kearney (Dundalk Institute of Technology). And thank you to the chair of the viva, Dr Stephanie Rains, and to the examiners, Professor Harriet Hawkins (Royal Holloway University of London) and Dr Steve Coleman (Maynooth) who “were excited by what the candidate’s use of musical concepts and terminology could bring to geographical thinking about place” and who applauded the “participatory mapping practices” that were part of the research.
