MUSSI Seminar Series - Our food system: climate change and the need for transformation

Tuesday, April 9, 2019 - 14:30 to 18:30
John Hume Lecture Hall 6

On April 9th, MUSSI is delighted to sponsor a public lecture by Judith Hitchman at 230pm in John Hume Lecture Hall 6

Judith will talk on “Our food system: climate change and the need for transformation.”

Judith is Irish, has been based in France for 45 years, and is currently president of Urgenci, the global Community Supported Agriculture network, representing approximately 2-3 million people. Her focus is promoting how food sovereignty and solidarity economy provide a rights-based alternative to the existing economic paradigm. She works on global food policy, especially throughout the UN system, and building bridges between food sovereignty, solidarity economy and agroecology, the key pillars of Urgenci’s work.

This event is part of the Festival of Food Sovereignty, sponsored by Maynooth University’s Department of Geography; the Department of Sociology; the Department of Adult & Community Education; the Department of International Development; Maynooth Green Campus; Maynooth University Conference and Workshop Fund; Afri; Trocaire.

Food sovereignty is about movements of citizens striving for democratic control of our food system. It is grounded in a belief in creating a new food system in which production and distribution protects the environment and the rights of all people to access resources such as land, seeds, and knowledge. Food Sovereignty requires transforming the current agricultural structure in Ireland and beyond.
