MU Research Week 2020 examines societal and cultural issues

Maynooth University Research Week 2020 will take place from Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, with all events available for the public to attend online.  
 

The public are invited to log on to a rich variety of online talks and presentations on multi-disciplinary research at the University. The week-long series of events will examine topics such as Covid-19, Brexit, sustainability, green energy, the arts and literature, including talks from published poets and writers.

The events include: 
 
  • Monday 19 October, 11:00-12:00 – ‘Data Science in the Covid era Hamilton Institute Talks’ – A detailed look at how the work of Maynooth Academics is assisting the Irish Government in its response to COVID-19. Details available here 
  • Tuesday 20 October, 19:30 – ‘Doireann Ní Ghriofa – Chasing the Ghost in my throat’ – A discussion with acclaimed poet and writer, Doireann Ní Ghriofa on her new book hosted by the Department of Early Irish. Details available here.  
  • Wednesday 21 October, 15:00 – ‘Sustainable & Healthy Cities for the Future’ – Dr Margaret Nyhan of UCC will discuss her work on developing intelligent solutions for sustainable, healthy, and liveable cities of the future. Details available here
  • Wednesday 21 October, 19:30 – ‘Laura Tunbridge – Beethoven with 2020 Vision’ – Prof Laura Tunbridge of University of Oxford will look at the life and work of Beethoven on the 250th anniversary of this birth. Details available here 
  • Thursday 22 October, 11:00 – ‘Extremum seeking control for wave energy systems’ – A presentation and discussion of model based and model free techniques for control of ocean wave energy systems. Details available here
  • Thursday 22 October, 19:30 – ‘Kevin Hjortshøj O’Rourke – Brexit in Historical Perspective’ – Prof Kevin O’Rourke of University of Oxford will discuss the origins of Brexit. Details available here
 
Maynooth University Research Week aims to showcase its research work across multiple disciplines and exploring key issues of relevance to society. The 2020 calendar of activity is diverse and reflects some of the key topics of the day, while also looking at future challenges and opportunities for communities at a local, national and global level.

Tá cuireadh tugtha don phobal chun logáil isteach chuig rogha leathan agus saibhir de chainteanna agus cuir i láthair ar líne 
a bhaineann leis an taighde  ildisciplíneach ag an Ollscoil. Scrúdóidh an tsraith imeachtaí a mhairfidh an tseachtain ábhair
lena n-áirítear Covid-19, Breatimeacht, inbhuanaitheacht, fuinneamh glas, na healaíona agus litríocht, agus i measc na n-imeachtaí beidh

Tá sé mar aidhm ag Seachtain Taighde Ollscoil Mhá Nuad ár gcuid taighde a bhaineann le réimse leathan disciplíní 
agus atá an-thábhachtach do shochaí an lae inniu a thaispeáint daoibh. Tá feilire na bliana seo an-eagsúil agus léiríonn sé cuid de phríomhábhair an lae, cé go dtugann sé aghaidh ar dhúshláin na todhchaí 
agus ar na féidearthachtaí atá ann do phobail go háitiúil, go náisiúnta agus go domhanda.
