As part of Purple Training for LGBTI students and allies, Dr Fergus Ryan delivered a workshop on “Purple Law, Purple Rights: Supporting people who are transgender, intersex and non-binary”.

This practically-focussed workshop addressed the human rights of people who are transgender, intersex, and non-binary in Ireland, and examine what thirds level institutions, students, and staff can do to help make third level a more positive and inclusive experience for people who are transgender, intersex, and non-binary. It considered, in particular, human rights standards relating to gender identity and gender expression, as well as some of the gaps in legal recognition and protection. The focus was on practical strategies, including the use of deed polls, obtaining gender recognition certificates, and leveraging the Equal Status Act 2000. Purple Training brought together students from all over Ireland to discuss strategies for improving the experience for people who are transgender, intersex, and non-binary at third level.

Dr Fergus Ryan lectures in Family Law, Contract Law and Gender, Sexuality and Law at the Department of Law, Maynooth University.
