“En-Gendering Monodrama: Artistic Research and Experimental Production”: A Research Report

The talk will be a final report on work undertaken during my two-year IRC funded research fellowship "En-Gendering Monodrama: Artistic Research and Experimental Production" hosted at Maynooth University. In the introductory part of the talk I will illustrate the main trajectories of the project and its completed outputs, with a view into future productions and publications. In the second half of my presentation, I will describe collaborative creative work led in conjunction with the Music Tech course on Morton Feldman's and Samuel Beckett's opera Neither. The talk will conclude with the first Maynooth University screening of our short-opera-film Neither (I nor Not I) [duration: 11’13’’ ca], the second and final output of the project, recently awarded a Kildare County Council short-film short-grass award.

Dr Francesca Placanica is project-leader of the artistic research project ‘En-Gendering Monodrama: Artistic Research and Experimental Production’, awarded a two-year Irish Research Council postdoctoral fellowship (2015-7) at Maynooth University, where she is currently lecturing in Performance and Musicology. She is co-editor of Cathy Berberian: Pioneer of Contemporary Vocality (Ashgate, 2014) and holds a PhD from the University of Southampton (2013). Forthcoming articles based on this project will be appearing in Twentieth-Century Music, The Journal of Musicological Research, and in anthologies on experimental music theatre and intertextuality. A professional opera singer, she has been recently awarded a five-year Visiting Research Fellowship at University of Huddersfield to pursue embodied research practices at the Centre for Psychophysical Performance Research and will be performing as a soloist in the upcoming Sligo Baroque Festival 2017.
