School of Law and Criminology Doctoral Scholar, Ethan Shattock, recently published an opinion piece with RTE Brainstorm. The article is entitled ‘What are Twitter’s Legal Obligations on Stopping Disinformation?’ It considers the legal implications of Twitter’s departure from the EU’s voluntary Code of Practice on Disinformation.

The article outlines what the EU’s Code of Practice on Disinformation sets out but also considers relevant new obligations under the new Digital Services Act (DSA) for large online platforms such as Twitter to manage systemic risks such as online disinformation. The article highlights that these new obligations under the DSA are designed to apply to disinformation. However, the extent of these obligations is uncertain and Twitter’s lack of compliance with EU law in this area will be determined by key stakeholders such as the European Commission and independent auditors as part of the DSA framework.
