David Mangan contributes to Landmark Cases in Privacy Law

David has published a chapter on the Canadian decision of Jones v Tsige in Landmark Cases in Privacy Law which was led by Professor Paul Wragg and Dr. Peter Coe. David contends that Jones is an example of the common law’s hesitant approach to a general cause of action in privacy. He notes that the famous article (“The Right to Privacy”) by Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis launched discussion in this area in 1890. He wonders if, in the 21st century, consideration may turn into more concerted action that delves into privacy and the law in a more comprehensive manner than the selective forays into the area that have arisen so far.

David researches in the areas of employment/labour law and private law obligations (such as privacy), with a focus on the impact of information technology in these areas. His work has been published in Europe, the UK, the US, and Canada. Amongst other research projects, he has edited with Professor Frank Hendrickx and Dr. Elena Gramano (and contributed to) an EU-wide study of privacy in the workplace entitled Privacy@Work which is forthcoming from Wolters Kluwer. David is also a member of the editorial boards of the European Labour Law Journal and the Italian Labour Law e-Journal. He is co-editor of the Global Workplace Law & Policy blog. David also teaches as part of Osgoode Hall’s Professional Development Legal Education in Toronto as well as the dual degree programs at the Faculty of Law, Université Catholique Lyon. For the 2022-23 academic year, is a Global Professor at KU Leuven’s Faculty of Law & Criminology.
