67th Annual Meeting of the International Commission for the History of Towns
The Department of History was delighted to co-host the 67th Annual Meeting of the International Commission for the History of Towns (12–16 September 2022). It was the first time in almost forty years that the Annual Meeting of the ICHT took place in Ireland.
It was in a spirit of peacebuilding and reconciliation in the years following the Second World War that the ICHT was established to promote dialogue and mutual understanding. It was especially fitting that the ICHT chose Ireland as the venue for its Annual Meeting in this, the centenary year of the partition of the island and the creation of Northern Ireland. Delegates from across Europe and further afield gathered in Maynooth to investigate aspects of cultural, economic, political and religious division in our towns through the ages, as well as processes of appeasement, resolution and rebuilding. Our colleague Michael Potterton is chairman of the Irish Historic Towns Atlas and one of Ireland’s two representatives on the ICHT. Jonathan Wright and Raymond Gillespie are also on the Editorial Board of the IHTA.
