Roger Griffin is Emeritus Professor of Modern History at Oxford Brookes University, UK.

He is widely acknowledged to be one of the world's foremost experts on the socio-historical and ideological dynamics of fascism, as well as the relationship to modernity of violence stemming from various forms of political or religious fanaticism, and in particular contemporary terrorism. In particular, his theory of fascism as a revolutionary form of ultranationalism driven by ‘palingenetic’ myth has had a major impact on comparative fascist studies since the mid-1990s. He is a co-founder of the International Association for the Comparative Study of Fascism (COMFAS), and of the open access journal Fascism, published by Brill.

Hiding Behind Desks, Podiums and Masks. A Pluralistic Approach to Understanding Three Contemporary 'Masters of War': Trump, Putin, and Netanyahu

This excursion in the challenging task of conceptualizing what is going on in the minds of a new breed of modern warmongering leaders takes its starting point from a famous song by Bob Dylan, featured in the recent film A Complete Unknown.

It first focuses on the deliberate distance they take from the human catastrophes unleashed by their decisions, which enables them to “play” with the world. It then focuses on the psychotic implications of the leaders’ reduction of the territory to the map, considers the problems related to applying a suitable political label to their breed of politics, and argues for the term “fascism” to be dropped in favour of a wave of “right-wing (pseudo-)populism” and autocratic nationalism, which is spreading through the world to destroy liberalism, religious or secular, and makes the chances of survival bleak for both humanism and humanity.

All are welcome!
