Education for Transformation in Post-Conflict Contexts, a focus on South Sudan

SPEAKERS: Dr Thomas Walsh, Dr Eilish Dillon,  Dr Walt Kilroy, Dr Jacinta Prunty

Dr Thomas Walsh is a lecturer and Deputy Head of Department (2019-2020) in the Department of Education. His research interests include history of education, education policy and legislation.

Dr Eilish Dillon is Head of the Department of International Development at Maynooth University. Eilish has been actively engaged in development education and activism in Ireland for nearly 30 years and is particularly interested in exploring different constructions of criticality when it comes to development and development education.

Dr Walt Kilroy is Associate Director of the Institute for International Conflict Resolution and Reconstruction (IICRR) at Dublin City University, where he is also an Assistant Professor. His research and teaching focus on conflict, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, civilian protection, and development, and the interaction between these processes. His book on reintegration programmes for ex-combatants after war in Sierra Leone and Liberia was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015 and is based on PhD fieldwork in West Africa. He previously worked in development and in journalism.

Dr Jacinta Prunty is a senior lecturer in History at Maynooth University where she has lectured since 1998, and a Holy Faith sister. Teaching, research and publications traverse several areas: town mapping; religious life and institutions from the early nineteenth century; Protestant and Catholic missionary activity internationally; and the management of archives. On completion of a 3-year term as head of Maynooth University Department of History, Jacinta spent a semester of sabbatical leave at Solidarity Teacher Training College in Yambio, South Sudan teaching English (and Art) and assisting with curriculum development and staff in-service.
